Research and Development
The Open Learning Development Centre (OLDC) is at the forefront of revolutionizing interactive education, especially in the context of distance learning. One of its key initiatives is the development of Self-Learning Materials (SLMs), which are designed to be much more than just study material. SLMs are neither a Book nor a guide, they are interactive and structured to give a similar experience of the classroom and allow students to engage at their own pace. These materials are developed with great attention to the learners' background, psychology, and individual learning styles. The content’s format is presented in a way that actively involves the learner, encouraging critical thinking and practical application of concepts. This makes SLMs not just instructional, but also appealing, making learning a more effective experience.
In addition to SLM, OLDC also places great emphasis on Audio and Video content, which play a pivotal role in enhancing the learning experience. These resources are developed in the Educational Technology (ET) lab, a creative hub equipped with high-end recording and production tools. The ET lab allows educators and professors to create engaging, high-quality audio-visual content for diverse learner needs. Audio and video materials provide students with another dimension of learning, often explaining concepts in ways that text alone cannot achieve. These resources break the concept of old school learning with just textbooks and guides; they also help in self-study, offering dynamic and interactive alternatives to written materials. OLDC also operates its own Learning Management System (LMS) through the "Pragyan" portal. This platform not only hosts SLMs but also enables students to complete internal assessments, track their progress, and stay notified about important updates. "Pragyan" is a comprehensive system that monitors students' academic activities and achievements. Moreover, OLDC is actively working on launching new online programs aimed at enhancing students' overall skills and professional development. The LMS incorporates elements of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and the "four quadrants" approach, which combines e-content, self-assessment, reference material, and discussion forums, providing a holistic learning experience.
Another innovative platform provided by OLDC is its "Radio COL". This platform is an integral part of the organization, offering students a plethora of additional resources. It features interviews with experts, discussions on trending educational topics, and coverage of the latest announcements. The official Youtube channel features “Vichar Vahini”, “Anubhuti: Unveiling Resilience” and “Spotlight” , which are interview-oriented segments. Additionally, the channel has a bulletin segment "COL Bulletin", that updates students with news about upcoming events, academic announcements, and other relevant information weekly. "Radio COL" serves as both an educational resource and a community hub, connecting students with broader insights and learning opportunities beyond the classroom.
Furthermore, OLDC has launched a student-oriented call center where School of Open Learning (SOL) students gain hands-on work experience. This call center not only offers SOL students exposure to a professional environment but also helps resolve grievances and support learners who may be facing challenges with their studies or access to resources. OLDC’s integrated approach—through SLMs construction, Audio & Video content, LMS and "COL Radio"—offers a comprehensive learning experience. It is dedicated to developing materials that are not only informative but also engaging and adaptable to the changing needs of learners. With its innovative resources and platforms, OLDC is paving the way for a more interactive and effective method of learning for the upcoming generation. It is constantly evolving to meet the needs of modern learners and shape the future of open and distance learning.
